Reiki Healing's Spiritual Roots: Buddhism and Shinto

Discover how Dr. Mikao Usui brought ancient spiritual wisdom into everyday life through Reiki healing, meditation, and self-healing.

What if you could bring more peace, healing, and love into your everyday life? That’s the beautiful promise of Reiki, a Japanese energy healing practice shaped by the spiritual wisdom of Buddhism and Shinto. More than 100 years ago, Dr. Mikao Usui developed a way for ordinary people to experience spiritual healing, calm their minds, and nurture their bodies. His gift was making these powerful practices accessible to everyone.

And perhaps the most wonderful part? You don’t have to change your religion, become a monk, or spend years studying spiritual teachings. You can begin right where you are.

How Did Buddhism and Shinto Influence Reiki?

To understand Reiki’s spiritual roots, let’s go back to Japan in the 1800s, when Mikao Usui was growing up. For centuries, Buddhism and Shinto have shaped how people in Japan understand life, nature, spirituality, and healing. Although they are different spiritual traditions, they share something beautiful: the belief that how we live, think, and treat others matters.

Buddhism teaches compassion, meditation, and freedom from suffering. Shinto emphasizes purification, gratitude, respect for nature, and living in harmony with the world around us. As scholars John Breen and Mark Teeuwen explain in A New History of Shinto, Buddhist and Shinto traditions have influenced one another throughout Japanese history.

You can recognize many of these values throughout Reiki. But Usui took them in a distinctive direction, developing a spiritual healing practice that people could experience for themselves.

            Buddhism: Finding Healing Peace Within

Have you noticed how your thoughts can change the way you feel physically?

When we’re worried, our shoulders tighten. When we’re angry, our breathing changes. When we feel peaceful, our bodies often begin to relax.

Buddhist teachings have long recognized the relationship between our minds and our experience of suffering.

Through meditation, mindfulness, and compassion, Buddhism encourages us to become more aware of our thoughts rather than allowing them to control us.

These ideas are woven into Reiki through:

            • Meditation to quiet the mind and develop inner awareness.
            • Compassion for ourselves and others.
            • Daily spiritual practice to create meaningful change.
            • Mindfulness to release worry, anger, and old patterns.

Usui is often associated with Tendai Buddhism, a Japanese tradition emphasizing meditation and spiritual development. Some Reiki practices also resemble elements of Shingon Buddhism, known for its use of sacred sounds, symbols, and meditation. However, the historical evidence does not establish exactly which teachings Usui incorporated.

The International House of Reiki’s historical research offers further insight into Usui’s spiritual background and the development of his healing system.

What matters most for our everyday lives is the shared wisdom: Inner peace isn’t something we simply wish for. It’s something we practice.

Shinto: Reconnecting With the Universal Life Force Energy

Have you ever walked into a forest, stood beside the ocean, or listened to a flowing stream and immediately felt more peaceful?

Shinto, Japan’s indigenous spiritual tradition, recognizes the sacred presence of kami—spiritual or divine presences associated with nature, places, and life.

At the heart of Shinto is a deep respect for the sacredness of life, nature, and the spiritual forces that connect us to the world around us.

This offers a beautiful spiritual parallel to Reiki’s Universal Life Force Energy—the energy that Reiki practitioners learn to channel for self-healing and healing others. Rather than drawing on their own personal energy, practitioners understand themselves as conduits for this universal source of healing energy.

Shinto also emphasizes purification, gratitude, and harmony. Water rituals, for example, symbolize washing away impurities and restoring spiritual balance.

Similarly, Reiki practitioners seek to clear stagnant or unwanted energy, restore harmony within the body, mind, and spirit, and strengthen their connection to Universal Life Force Energy.

Both traditions remind us that we are part of something greater than ourselves—and that healing can begin when we reconnect with that sacred connection.

Mikao Usui: Bringing Spiritual Healing to Everyone

In 1922, Mikao Usui undertook a spiritual retreat on Mount Kurama, a sacred mountain near Kyoto, Japan.

According to the account preserved on his 1927 memorial stone in Tokyo, he spent 21 days fasting and engaging in spiritual practice. During this retreat, he conducted a Shinto waterfall purification ritual when he experienced a profound spiritual awakening and an extraordinary connection with Reiki healing energy.

Imagine experiencing something so extraordinary that it changes the direction of your life.

Usui could have kept his discovery to himself. Instead, he chose to share Reiki with others. He established a healing and teaching center in Tokyo, helping people learn to practice Reiki for themselves and offer healing to others. This was a remarkable part of his legacy.

Spiritual development had often been associated with monks, religious teachers, and dedicated spiritual practitioners. Usui offered a practical path that everyday people could follow.

You don’t need years of religious training. You can learn Reiki, practice self-healing, meditate, and gradually bring greater awareness and compassion into your life.

Reiki: More Than Meditation, More Than Philosophy

Buddhism offers profound teachings about the mind. Shinto teaches harmony with nature and the sacred.

Reiki brings another dimension: the experience of spiritual energy healing.

During a Reiki session, practitioners channel what they understand as spiritually guided Universal Life Force Energy. Recipients often describe warmth, tingling, deep relaxation, emotional release, or a wonderful feeling of peace.

Some people feel as though a weight has lifted. Others experience a quietness they haven’t felt in years.

At Radiant You, one client beautifully described Reiki as “like taking a shower for your soul.”

From a spiritual perspective, Reiki supports healing on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. Practitioners believe it helps release energetic blocks and restore the body’s natural balance.

Scientific research has explored Reiki’s potential benefits for relaxation, anxiety, and pain, although the evidence remains limited and inconsistent. The National Institutes of Health’s overview of Reiki explains the current scientific understanding and research limitations. Reiki is a complementary practice, not a replacement for conventional medical care.

Yet Reiki’s significance extends beyond the healing session itself.

Usui understood that lasting transformation also depends on how we think, act, and live each day.

That’s where his five principles come in.

Just for Today: The Five Reiki Principles

Perhaps the most beautiful part of Usui’s teachings is their simplicity. He didn’t ask people to become perfect or transform their lives overnight. He encouraged them to begin with today.

            Just for Today

Just for today, I focus on the present moment.

Just for today, I give thanks for my many blessings.

Just for today, I remain peaceful.

Just for today, I do my work honestly.

Just for today, I am kind to my neighbor & every living thing.

            — Dr. Mikao Usui (adapted wording)

These five Reiki principles reflect the compassion, mindfulness, gratitude, and integrity found throughout Buddhist and Japanese spiritual traditions.

And they’re wonderfully practical. Think about what happens when you wake up feeling anxious. Instead of worrying about everything that might go wrong, you remind yourself to focus on the present moment.

When you’re frustrated with someone, you pause and choose kindness. When life feels overwhelming, you take a moment to appreciate what is going well.

Small choices? Absolutely. But repeated over time, they can change how we experience our lives.

Just for Today reminds us that healing doesn’t require us to fix everything at once. We begin with this moment, this thought, this choice.

Reiki Is a Way of Life, Not Just a Healing Session

Imagine beginning your morning with ten minutes of Reiki self-healing and quiet meditation. You take a few deep breaths, place your hands gently on your body, and allow yourself to become still.

Perhaps you reflect on the five Reiki principles or set an intention for the day. As you continue this practice, you may notice that you’re less reactive, more compassionate with yourself, and more aware of what you truly need.

You begin recognizing old emotional patterns rather than automatically repeating them. Your intuition may grow stronger. You become more comfortable trusting yourself. This is where Reiki becomes so much more than a healing technique.

Reiki becomes a pathway to living with greater awareness, peace, health, and love.

And you don’t need to practice Buddhism or Shinto to benefit from its teachings. Reiki is open to people of all faiths and spiritual backgrounds.

Learning Reiki: A Gift You Give Yourself

One of Reiki’s greatest gifts is that anyone can learn to channel Universal Life Force Energy for self-healing and healing others. It’s a practice you can carry throughout your life to calm your mind, restore balance, and care for yourself and those you love.

Reiki is also finding a place in conventional healthcare. Hartford Hospital offers Reiki to patients and families and teaches Reiki classes. A 2024 nursing study found that a brief session combining Reiki and meditation helped healthcare workers feel less stressed and anxious. These findings are encouraging, although they do not isolate Reiki’s effects from meditation.

At Radiant You, our Reiki Certification Classes teach you to practice Reiki for yourself and share it with others. You don’t need special abilities or previous experience—just a willingness to learn.

Bringing Reiki Into Your Own Life

Dr. Mikao Usui left us something extraordinary: a spiritual healing practice that we can carry into everyday life.

His teachings remind us that healing isn’t only about relieving discomfort. It’s also about releasing what no longer serves us, developing a more peaceful mindset, and opening ourselves to a fuller, more joyful life.

At Radiant You, we’ve been sharing Reiki and Intuitive Energy Healing since 1998. We’ve seen how meaningful it can be when people begin to feel lighter, reconnect with themselves, and discover new possibilities for their lives.

Whether you’re curious about experiencing Reiki healing or learning to practice Reiki yourself, you don’t need to know everything before you begin.

You simply need to be open to the possibility of change.

            Just for today, choose healing.
