February 14, 2026Anxiety vs. Depression: What’s the Difference—and Why They’re Often Treated Together
Anxiety and depression feel different, yet they often appear together—and that’s not a coincidence. Many people feel overwhelmed, tired, disconnected, or stuck in their heads.
YOU CAN’T THINK YOURSELF OUT OF ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION! But you can take simple, gentle steps right now to calm your body and clear your energy to feel more like yourself again. (National Institutes of Health)
Anxiety focuses on the future. It creates worry, fear, racing thoughts, tightness in the chest, shallow breathing, and a sense that something bad is about to happen.
Depression pulls you into the past. It brings sadness, numbness, low energy, lack of motivation, hopelessness, and a feeling of disconnection from yourself and life.
Even though they show up differently, anxiety and depression affect many of the same systems in the body:
- Dysregulates the nervous system
- Raises stress hormones like cortisol
- Disrupts sleep and drain energy levels
- Shortens breathing patterns
- Harms digestion and increases inflammation
That’s why many natural tools help both anxiety and depression—especially practices that calm the nervous system, improve sleep, support brain chemistry, and help the body feel safe again.
“I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression at times, coming from both parents and a lot of childhood drama and trauma. Fortunately, monthly Reiki and Energy Healing, along with my favorite daily activities help my be my best self. reclaim real self when I get triggered. They literally saved my life. Try them and feel better today!” Wendy Wisner
🌿 10 Things You Can Do Right Now to Feel Better
- Breathe Deeply (Your Fastest Reset)
When stress hits, the first thing that changes is your breath. Most people breathe shallowly—or hold their breath without realizing it.
“Many of us breathe too shallowly for much of the day — especially when we’re stressed — and shallow breathing makes anxiety and nervous system dysregulation worse. Deep nasal breathing improves oxygen exchange and activates the natural calm response.” Harvard Health; Frontiers in Psychology; Journal of Clinical Psychology
Try this: (Breath)
- Take a deep breath in, top it off with another breath. Hold it for 2 seconds. Now blow out through your mouth for 7 seconds
- Inhale 5 seconds through your nose
- Exhale 5 seconds through your nose
- Repeat for one full minute
Breathe in love, light, and health. As you breathe out, imagine releasing stress, fear, and emotional weight.
Set a gentle reminder on your phone once an hour—just one minute can shift everything.
- Ground Yourself in the Present Moment
Anxiety lives in the future. Depression often lives in the past. Grounding brings you back to now—where you are safe.
Meditation quickly gets you back in the now, helping you release anxiety or depression. Here’s how to get started. Learn to Meditate
Try this grounding exercise:
- Name 5 things you can see
- Notice how your clothes feel on your skin
- Listen—what sounds do you hear?
- Take one slow breath and notice it fully
Your body begins to relax when it knows you’re here.
- Meditate and Pray
You can’t think your way out of anxiety or depression—but you can quiet your mind and reconnect.
Meditation is listening. Prayer is speaking.
Science tells us, “both calm the nervous system and lift your energy.” Your Angels are always guiding—listen.
Meditation helps you hear your Highest Self beneath fear. Prayer helps you release what feels heavy and invite Divine support. When anxiety is loud, meditate more. Quieting the mind helps your body feel safe again.
You don’t need to do this perfectly. Sit. Breathe. Listen. Let yourself be supported. I started meditating when jogging–see if it works for you. 😃
- Move Your Body (Even a Little)
Movement changes your brain chemistry. You don’t need a full workout, but daily exercise reduces cortisol and boosts endorphins, lowering anxiety and depression over the long term.
- Stretch or yoga
- Take a 10-minute walk
- Gently dance or sway
- or a Sweat-drenching workout
Even brief movement lowers cortisol and increases endorphins. Regular movement can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression as effectively as medication for some people. (Medical News Today)
- Drink More Water
Your brain is about 75% water. Dehydration increases anxiety, brain fog, and low mood.
Sip water slowly and consciously. Let it ground you.
Drinking enough water helps regulate stress hormones and supports serotonin—the “feel-good” chemical that improves mood, sleep, and emotional balance. You’ll have clearer thinking and more energy. (National Institutes of Health)
- Eat to Support Your Nervous System
Food directly affects your mood and energy.
When anxiety or depression rises:
- Eat healthy–get enough healthy protein, whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and grains
- Reduce sugar, caffeine, and processed foods
Nourishing your body helps your nervous system settle and your energy stabilize. Simple nourishment helps your body feel safe again.
- Sleep and Rest More Than You Think You Need
Healing requires rest—you don’t need to earn it.
Pause between tasks, especially when anxiety drives you to push. Close your eyes. Breathe deeply, and slow down your pace. Even short moments of rest help your nervous system reset and your energy rebalance.
Sleep deprivation alone increases anxiety and depression symptoms. Sleep and rest repair the body, calms the mind, and restores your natural flow. Rest is healing—not lazy.
- Practice Gratitude (Gently)
Gratitude doesn’t erase pain. It gives your nervous system something steady to land on.
Once an hour, notice one small thing:
- Sunshine or light instead of darkness
- A kind message
- One more day of life
Gratitude shifts your energy out of survival mode and into presence. Small shifts create meaningful healing.
🚫 What to Avoid When Anxiety or Depression Is High
- Stop Judging Yourself
Self-judgment tightens the body and spikes anxiety. Also, notice how tight you feel after criticizing another.
When critical thoughts appear, pause and replace them with one thing you appreciate about yourself and the world around you.
- Limit Sugar & Processed Foods, and Avoid Alcohol and Recreational Drugs
These foods may numb feelings briefly and spike energy but the crashing mood makes anxiety and depression worse. (ScienceDirect)
Recreational drugs open your energy field to negative energies that continue to plague your thoughts and emotions long after the buzz is gone.
- Severely Limit News & Social Media
Constant stimulation keeps your nervous system on high alert.
Protect your energy—especially during stressful seasons.
Doomscrolling “fuels loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Plus, it disrupts your sleep. Your body responds to repeated bad news as if it is continuous danger.” (UC San Diego)
🌟 Healing Anxiety at the Root (The Radiant You Way)
Anxiety is your body’s signal:
“This is too much, too fast, for too long.”
At Radiant You, we help clients heal anxiety and depression by addressing root causes—such as childhood or intergenerational trauma, grief, emotional overload, spiritual disconnection, or unexplained fears. In some cases, we also use Past Life Regression to release deeply held patterns.
Each Healing clears stored emotional stress and retrains how your body responds to triggers. Over time, things that once overwhelmed you simply… don’t anymore.
As one client shared after her Reiki session:
“Wendy helped me realize the burdens I was taking on that were not mine to carry. I feel lighter and greatly reduced my anxiety and depression so that I feel like my old self. I let go of the things that are no longer serving me. I reignited my spirituality and I am on my path to being the best version of myself.” Baby Shark
