            You may remember how fear felt during the early days of COVID. You could feel fear as you entered a grocery store.

            In today’s world, we are more connected than ever—but that also means we are more emotionally connected. Psychologists describe a phenomenon called Emotional Contagion, where we subconsciously absorb and mirror the emotions of others. According to Psychology Today, this can be as simple as smiling when someone smiles at you—but it also means we can “catch” emotions like anxiety, fear, anger, and sadness.

            The difference today is the scale and intensity. Through social media, news, and constant digital connection, many people are exposed to a steady stream of emotional content—especially fear and uncertainty related to global events. This creates what can be thought of as mass consciousness stress, where collective emotional energy begins to influence how individuals feel. You may notice this as feeling off, overwhelmed, or anxious without a clear reason. Sometimes, what you’re feeling isn’t just coming from within—it’s something your system is picking up from the world around you.

            Chronic stress keeps your body stuck in fight, flight, or freeze, sending stress chemicals through your system.

            How Intergenerational Trauma & Genetics Shape Your Stress Response

            Just as you can inherit physical traits, you can also inherit stress patterns.

            Intergenerational trauma or ancestral trauma is the passing down of unresolved stress and trauma from one generation to the next. This can include experiences such as abuse, war, extreme poverty, systemic oppression, racism, or survival-based living. Even if you did not personally experience these events, your body and nervous system may still carry patterns shaped by those who came before you. These inherited patterns can influence how safe or unsafe the world feels, how you respond to stress, and how easily your system becomes overwhelmed.

            Scientists believe this can happen through epigenetics. Epigenetics means:

            A gene itself does not change—but it can be turned on or off based on life experiences, especially stress.

            These changes can affect:

            • How your body handles stress
            • How quickly you feel fear or anxiety
            • How easily your system calms down

            War creates chronic stress, meaning the body stays in survival mode for long periods. Although you may not have been exposed to war in your lifetime, your ancestors were.

            Your nervous system may:

            • Feel overwhelmed
            • Struggle to trust
            • Shut down emotionally
            • Avoid stimulation
